RFQ0000382: TWO NGOs TO MANAGE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A QUILT MAKING PROJECT IN TWO DISTRICTS IN MPUMALANGA

Ministers of Education and Health from 20 countries including South Africa in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) agreed to work collaboratively towards bring education and health sectors to work together on a common agenda to support adolescents and young people in response to HIV and other sexual and reproductive health needs. The core initiatives under this commitment aim to strengthen HIV prevention efforts and foster positive health outcomes by advocating for access to quality, comprehensive sexuality education as well as sexual and reproductive (SRHR) for young people in the East and Southern Africa region.

Comprehensive Sexuality Education is highlighted in South Africa’s National (NSP) for HIV, TB and STIs 2018-2022 to support HIV prevention amongst young people. The following sub-objectives under Goal One of the NSP demonstrate the importance of strengthening the interventions and implementation of ESA related activities:

Goal One, sub-objective 1.1.3: Provision of sensitive and age appropriate sexual and reproductive health services (SRH) and Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE)

Goal One, sub-objective 1.3.1: Scaling up STI prevention by providing high-quality health information and timely health services for persons at risk particularly interventions hat ensure STI component of SRH and CSE programmes are fully capacitated and accurate

As part of the documentation process for the GIZ ESA Regional Programme in cooperation with SANAC, the SANAC Secretariat and the Provincial Department of Education (DoE) have agreed that the quilting process is a powerful tool for educators to document their journeys, before undertaking the CSE training and after engaging and completing the training. The CSE trainings are provided by the DoE in an effort to improve teaching of a CSE module for learners in Mpumalanga.

The SANAC Secretariat is looking for two community based organisations (CBOs) based in Mpumalanga to undertake a quilting project. The selected CBOs are to be trained on the quilt making process, once training has been completed, the CBOs will then facilitate the session for making of quilts for the educators during the CSE trainings hosted by the DoE in the province. Once quilting session is completed with educators, a transference of skills to facilitate this process would have happened where educators are equipped to facilitate a similar documentation process through quilting for their learners.
