The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) leads South Africa’s response to the national HIV, TB & STIs epidemics. SANAC is building a dynamic team that can facilitate its effective leadership of the national response. In addition to its core funds SANAC receives project funds from government and donors to implement strategic NSP programmes. We are therefore recruiting.

Name of Position:  Project Coordinator Prevention Technical Services

Reporting to         : Technical Lead – Prevention Services

Level                      : D2

Duration                 : 1 year contract

The main responsibility of this position is to coordinate the Eastern Southern Africa (ESA) Regional Programme aimed to improve sexual reproductive health and HIV prevention amongst young people in ESA, specifically in South Africa and also the DSD-funded Social and Behaviour Change Communication Programme which is implemented by CBOs across the country focusing on adolescent girls and young women.

The coordinator will oversee the activities and efforts of SANAC in coordinating these two programmes by supporting relevant programme managers of each project. They will also ensure cross learnings and linkages between programmes.

Key Responsibilities:

Stakeholder relations

  • Work with multiple programme stakeholders to develop and maintain key relationships
  • Work closely with the other staff within the NSP Implementation unit and other SANAC units to ensure seamless multi-directional flow of information between the programmes and the various SANAC structures and internal arrangements
  • Represent SANAC at meetings upon request in relation to ESA and SBCC programme


  • Support the preparation of supporting documentation for meetings as required
  • Prepare communication materials including letters, invitations and PowerPoint presentations
  • Coordinate the logistical arrangements programme workshops and meetings

Technical support:

Multisector mapping and regular update on ESA related activities to strengthen comprehensive reporting on ESA targets

  • Update mapping of ESA activities drafted initially for She Conquers

Strengthen young people’s participation in strategic discussions

  • She Conquers Committee discussion on projects
  • Support youth sector (including She Conquers rep) involvement in AIDS Council meetings

Coordinate engagements of key stakeholders on ESA and SBCC related goals and targets               

  • Quarterly meetings between DoE and SANAC on implementation of CSE training
  • Multisectoral meeting on ESA with accountable parties to discuss coordination and monitoring
  • Quarterly meetings with provincial stakeholders of the DSD SBCC programme


Coordinate NSP 2017-2022 ESA-related and SBCC Goals and targets to strengthen provincial implementation activities

  • Provide capacity for CSE by training of educators on CSE in at least one province
  • Expand coordination and monitoring to at least two provinces for ESA
  • Provide capacity for SBCC by training on specific DSD programmes across all 9 provinces

Develop a model approach for mutual accountability between national and subnational level AIDS councils in line with ESA targets

  • Document success factors
  • Disseminate model approach

Strengthen South Africa ESA multi-sectoral country reporting on ESA targets to regional level (SADC)

  • Promote ESA related integration using various data sources/systems in line with the Focus for Impact approach
  • Encourage provincial use of the data from the Focus for Impact platform in implementation planning and decision making


  • A Bachelor’s Degree or 3 year Diploma in Social Sciences, Public Health or other related field

Experience, Knowledge and Skills

  • Experience in stakeholder management, coordination and networking, preferably in the health and education sector
  • Experience working with young people would be an added advantage
  • Regional experience would also be an added advantage
  • At least 2 years’ experience working in area of: sexual and reproductive health and rights, social and behaviour change communication, comprehensive sexuality education, or HIV for adolescent girls and young women
  • Proven ability to communicate and interact with high-level officials from government agencies, NGOs, international development organisations, and the private sector
  • High degree of organisational skills, initiative and exceptional problem-solving abilities needed
  • Exceptional communication, writing, and editing ability
  • Computer skills essential, including ability to use Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, and the Internet
  • Ability to work in a deadline-oriented environment and manage multiple tasks efficiently
  • Ability to maintain document archives
  • Excellent English (written and oral) fluency required, knowledge of other local languages helpful
  • Knowledge and understanding of the NSP and ESA is desirable
  • Ability to travel upon request
  • Valid Code B Drivers’ license
  • South African citizen
