The South African National Aids Council (SANAC) leads South Africa’s response to the national HIV and AIDS, TB & STIs epidemics. SANAC is building a dynamic team that can facilitate its effective leadership of the national response.

Location: KwaZulu Natal (1x uThukela and 1 x Zululand)

Purpose of the Peer Educators for Adolescent and Young People Programme?
SANAC and the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial AIDS Council are looking to appoint two Peer Educators: AYP in the Zululand and uThukela districts. These Peer Educators will play a crucial role in HIV prevention programs aimed at increasing youth participation and representation within a multi-sectoral framework, with the ultimate goal of achieving an AIDS-free generation by 2030. We are seeking passionate individuals aged 18 to 24 who are eager to take on a leadership role in this vital mission. The Peer Educators:AYP will be actively involved in community programs, serving as role models and advocates for HIV prevention initiatives in their respective districts. They will act as local catalysts and community leaders, mobilizing and engaging Adolescence and Young People (AYP) and various stakeholders to take action. These peer educators will provide evidence-based, targeted messaging and offer guidance on where services are most needed. They will also be tasked with identifying innovative and relevant approaches to ensure the voices and needs of adolescents and young people are prioritized in decision-making processes. Through their efforts, they will contribute significantly to the overarching goal of creating an AIDS-free generation by 2030.
The objectives of the peer educators are to:
- Create awareness and activate Peers to be actively involved in issues that affect them.
- Develop communication strategies that are relevant and resonate with the youth.
- Ensure that current AYP programs implemented are reaching the correct people and are provided with fidelity.
- Actively participate in the design, enhancement, and coordination of Adolescent and Young People targeted programmes.
- Facilitate peer-to-peer networks and create a knowledge management hub to share lessons across Districts.
Roles and Responsibilities
Furthermore, the Peer Educators will:
- Serve as a youth representative on AYP HIV Prevention related matters at workshops, advisory committees, meetings and on task forces in the district.
- Raise awareness and mobilize peers for youth prevention programs
- Speak publicly, as, and when required, on HIV Prevention matters that affect the youth
- Identify and collaborate with local stakeholders to support and actively participate in AYP HIV prevention programs
- Support organizations to develop youth friendly policies and procedures to create more opportunities for all young people
- Develop a knowledge sharing hub to document lessons that can be shared across Districts
- Advocate for availability and accessibility of youth friendly services at local level.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly report done by ambassadors and share with District AIDS Coordinator and other relevant structures.
Eligibility Criteria
- The Peer Educator/s must be a female between the ages of 18-24 years
- The Peer Educator/s should be in good academic standard with no lower than a level-4 overall, and must agree to maintain that good standing throughout their term
- Must be familiar and have participated in AYP programs before
- The Peer Educator/s must be prepared to meet all the obligations outlined in the ‘Roles and Responsibilities’
- Ability to communicate and engage at different levels
- Ability to empower other AYP in their communities
- Report writing and negotiation skills
Reporting
The Peer Educator/s will directly report to their respective District AIDS Council coordination/s for daily operations and will receive support from the Provincial AYP Technical Officer for technical and other administrative functions.
Stipend
The Peer Educator/s will receive a monthly stipend for their service during the term of the Voluntary Agreement
