Launch of National HIV and TB Stigma Campaign
In his capacity as chair of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will launch the national HIV and TB stigma reduction interventions in Durban on 9 June, as delegates gather in the city for the 7th SA AIDS Conference.
The results of South Africa’s first National Stigma Index Survey will also be released at this event.
SANAC undertook the study – which involved 10 000 respondents and is the largest of its kind in the world – in partnership with people living with HIV.
The stigma reduction programmes rest on strategic partnerships involving South African and international organisations in the state and civil society sectors.
In addition to the Stigma Index, key interventions are:
- A nationwide legal service for people with HIV and TB who experience stigma and infringements of their human rights.
- A community-based stigma reduction programme that is being developed and tested in the Eastern Cape and will eventually be extended to all provinces.
- Communication campaigns to raise public awareness of stigma and help build a more supportive society.

Stigma Index Survey: Research into Action
Many scientific advances have been made in HIV treatment. There are now laws to protect people living with HIV and we have a much better understanding of the virus and the underlying factors that place people at risk of HIV infection. Despite these advances, stigma and discrimination remain a reality for many people living with or affected by HIV.
SANAC undertook South Africa’s first National Stigma Index Survey, interviewing more than 10 000 HIV-positive people in 18 districts, the largest survey of its kind in the world. The survey was an initiative driven by people with HIV, for people with HIV. This report provides an objective view that will serve as a baseline for future comparisons.
This session will release the results of the survey, and look at the ground-breaking campaign that will address the levels of stigma and discrimination in South Africa. Panelists include Ms Prudence Mabele, from Positive Women’s Network, Mr Anele Yawa from Treatment Action Campaign, Mr Mluleki Zazini from National Association for People Living with HIV, Prof Leickness Simbayi from the Human Science Research Council and Dr Fareed Abdullah, CEO of the South African National AIDS Council.
