SANAC Welcomes Groundbreaking HIV Drug Lenacapavir Amid Push for Local Manufacturing
PRETORIA, 08 April 2026 – The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) welcomes the arrival of the new HIV prevention drug, lenacapavir, following the Department of Health’s announcement on 7 April 2026 confirming the receipt of the first batch of 37,920 doses.
With its unprecedented efficacy and convenience, lenacapavir represents a game-changer in South Africa’s comprehensive package of HIV prevention tools. As a twice-yearly injectable administered to HIV-negative individuals, it stands as one of the most effective pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) options on offer – particularly significant for a country that bears the world’s highest HIV burden.
As announced by SANAC Chairperson, Deputy President Paul Mashatile, during the official World TB Day commemoration on 24 March 2026 in the Western Cape, SANAC is actively collaborating with key stakeholders to advance discussions on access pathways, including licensing, for the local manufacturing of lenacapavir. This strategic initiative will enhance sustainability, affordability and equitability while positioning South Africa to support regional production, where the need for the drug is greatest.
“South Africa’s pioneering of local manufacturing represents an important step towards strengthening the region and the continent’s capacity to expand sustainable access to life-saving health commodities, while promoting self-reliance,” said SANAC CEO Dr Thembisile Xulu, who chairs the Ad Hoc Committee on Lenacapavir Voluntary Licensing.
SANAC, working closely with the Department of Health and the Presidency, will soon announce details of the official public launch of lenacapavir, during which further updates on the licensing process will be provided.
