PPRETORIA, 08 July 2020 – The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) notes with empathy the announcement of the North West Premier, Prof. Job Mokgoro testing positive for corona virus.

The Council hereby wishes the Premier a speedy recovery as he battles the viral disease in self-isolation. Prof. Mokgoro serves as the Chairperson of the North West Provincial Council on AIDS (PCA), a provincial SANAC structure responsible for HIV, TB and STIs response in the said province. The Premier announced his tests results at a virtual Special Provincial Executive Council (EXCO) held this past Monday 06 July.

Prof. Mokgoro reiterated that he is not incapacitated in any way and is reasonably in good spirits. He continues to work from home and has encouraged those who came into contact with him to self-quarantine and get tested – this includes his support staff.

SANAC also extends well wishes to all South Africans infected and affected by the corona virus pandemic and encourages everyone to stay safe.

As the country enters what scientists predict as the peak, it has become more important for all of us to strictly adhere to safety precautions that minimise exposure and a further spread of the virus. Let us continue to wash our hands often, wear masks in public and practise social distancing.

We also call on our communities to work together to ensure that all homes and common spaces are COVID-19 safe. Let us also ensure that key and vulnerable populations, inclusive of the elderly as well as people with co-morbidities are kept safe and protected during this trying time.

It will take a concerted effort from all of us to beat COVID-19.
