Issue date: 18 July 2011
The SA National AIDS Council’s Men’s Sector (SANAC Men’s Sector) welcomes the verdict and life
sentence against Johan Kotze and his co-accused. As a sector, we believe that
there are men who declare war against women and children in our society and this
has to be discouraged. The life sentence against Kotze and his co-accused
brings hope to women and girl children in South Africa.
The sector and its member organisations recognise that a lot of factors,
including emotional and psychological trauma, can lead some men to committing
such dastardly acts as killing and raping women and children. However, we are
appealing to men and boys to seek help when they feel frustrated, angry and
helpless instead of killing their partners. There are services available to
help address their issues.
As we celebrate victory for justice in the Johan Kotze case, the sector
through its Brothers for Life Campaign in partnership with the SA National
Men’s Action Group, Progressive Men of South Africa, CONTRALESA, National
Association of People Living with HIV and the SA Council of Churches, will
continue to engage men in all provinces as part of Nelson Mandela’s birthday month
on issues of gender-based violence and how it adversely affects our communities
and society.
