World AIDS Day is commemorated each year on the 1st of December and is an opportunity for every community to unite in the fight against HIV, show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have passed away.

This year’s World AIDS Day in South Africa will be a chance to reflect on what we have achieved with the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on HIV, STIs and TB, 2012–2016, which is coming to an end. World AIDS Day will also look ahead to the development of the new NSP (2017-2022).

The slogan for World AIDS Day 2016 is: “It is in our hands to end HIV and TB”This guide contains a listing of and advisories on all the products and tools contained in the 2016 World AIDS Day toolkit.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

1. CONCEPT AND RATIONALE

South Africa is about to embark on a new National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB and STIs for the next 5 years. A plan that will take us forward and put us on track to end HIV, TB and STIs. This World AIDS Day, each and every South African has an opportunity to share how we can reach this visionary goal. HIV treatment can dramatically extend the lifespan of people living with HIV and effectively prevent HIV transmission. There are also many proven opportunities for HIV prevention beyond medicines, including condom programming, behaviour change, voluntary medical male circumcision and programmes with key populations. These have clearly demonstrated their capacity to sharply lower rates of new HIV infections. HIV infections may not disappear in the foreseeable future, but the HIV and TB epidemics can be ended as a global health threat. We cannot hope to end AIDS-related deaths and new TB and HIV infections without you. IT IS IN OUR HANDS TO END HIV AND TB because:

  • We are a pro-active country in the HIV, TB & STIs response
  • We have formed a strong partnership between government, civil society, business and labour for our collaborative response
  • We have developed and adopted a National Development Plan Vision 2030 which guides our efforts
  • We all contribute towards the development of the country’s National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB and STIs
  • We all commit to march towards ending AIDS and TB by 2030
