The South African National Aids Council (SANAC) leads South Africa’s response to the national HIV and AIDS, TB & STIs epidemics. SANAC is building a dynamic team that can facilitate its effective leadership of the national response.

Name of Position: 10 x Peer Educators: Adolescent and Young People (Volunteers)

Reporting to: Provincial Technical Officers: AYP

Location: KwaZulu Natal (x5), NW (x2), GP (x2) and EC (x2)

Duration: 9 Months (Jan – September 2025)

Purpose of Peer Educators: Adolescent and Young People (AYP):

SANAC and Provincial AIDS Council seeks to appoint Ten (10) Volunteer Peer Educators:  Adolescent Young People in KwaZulu Natal, North West, Gauteng and Eastern Cape for HIV Prevention Programmes to enhance youth participation and representation in the multi-sectoral response in ensuring an AIDS-free generation by 2030. They  should be passionate individuals between the ages of 15 and 24, who want to play a key leadership role in ensuring an AIDS free generation by 2030. These Peer Educators: AYP will actively participate in the programs offered in various communities in the province  and act as  role models and willing to represent AYP HIV Prevention initiatives in respective Districts. Acting as a local catalyst and community Champion for AYP HIV Prevention.  The Peer Educator: AYP will mobilize and engage adolescent girls and young women and multi-sector stakeholders to act, provide evidence-based targeted messages, provide direction on where services are needed most and identify innovative and relevant ways to ensure Peer Educator: AYP through pivotal decisions.

The objectives of the Peer Educators: AYP are to:

  1. Create awareness and activate peers to be actively involved in issues that affect
  2. Develop communication strategies that are relevant and resonates with the
  3. Ensure that current AYP programs implemented are reaching the correct people and are provided with fidelity.
  4. Actively participate in the design, enhancement, and coordination of AYP targeted
  5. Facilitate peer-to-peer networks and create a knowledge management hub to share lessons across Districts.

Roles and Responsibilities

Furthermore, the Peer Educators will:

  • Serve as a youth representative on AYP HIV Prevention related matters at workshops, advisory committees, meetings and on task forces in the district
  • Raise awareness and mobilize peers for youth prevention programs
  • Speak publicly, as, and when required, on HIV Prevention matters that affect the youth
  • Identify and collaborate with local stakeholders to support and actively participate in AYP HIV prevention programs
  • Support organizations to develop youth friendly policies and procedures to create more opportunities for all young people
  • Develop a knowledge sharing hub to document lessons that can be shared across Districts
  • Advocate for availability and accessibility of youth friendly services at local
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly report done by ambassadors and share with District AIDS Coordinator and other relevant structures.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Peer Educators – AYP must be a female between the ages of 18-24 years
  • Peer Educators – AYP should be in good academic standard with minimum requirement of Completed Matric overall and must agree to maintain that good standing throughout their term. Tertiary Education will be added advantage
  • Must be familiar and have participated in AYP programs before
  • Peer Educators – AYP must be prepared to meet all the obligations outlined in the ‘Roles and Responsibilities’
  • Ability to communicate and engage at different levels
  • Ability to empower other AYP in their communities
  • Report writing and negotiation skills

Reporting

The Peer Educators – AYP will directly to the relevant District AIDS Council coordination structures for daily operations and supported by the Provincial AYP Technical Officer for technical and other administrative functions.

Stipend
The Volunteer Peer Educator/s: AYP will receive monthly stipend of R5000.00 for their service during the term of the Voluntary Agreement.
