The South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), together with the Shikundu Traditional Council and Gift of the Givers gathered at the Xikundu traditional Council to handover food parcels to 500 families on 09 March.
The donation serves as a continuation of the COVID-19 social relief committed by the SANAC Chairperson, Deputy President David Mabuza during the official commemoration of World AIDS Day on 01 December 2021 in Xikundu.
The food donation is aligned to Goal 4 of the current National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB and STIs, which calls upon the addressing of social, economic and structural drivers of HIV, TB and STIs. Poverty, hunger and limited access to economic opportunities are some of the social and structural drivers that hinder progress against efforts to curb the spread of HIV.
SANAC’s Rev. Zwo Nevhutalu, who led the initiative from inception to finalisation, addressed the community and expressed how pleased SANAC is about being able to assist the community of Xikundu and how deeply invested The Deputy President is in bettering people’s lives.
Tapiwa Marima, the Project Manager for Gift of the Givers also spoke about the importance of serving those who are in need and thanked all the parties who played a role to make the initiative a great success.
Spokesperson of the Shikundu Royal Council, Hosi Magomane, speaking on behalf of Hosi Maluleke, addressed the people of Xikundu, giving them reassurance that the Royal Council will always be there for them as they have been called to serve. “This is history, this is a blessing and this is the hand of God”, he said jubilantly. He also extended gratitude on behalf of the Royal House to all the parties that joined hands to help the people of Xikundu, “everything that is given for free, always has significant value,” he added.
Members of the community expressed their gratitude to SANAC, Hosi Maluleke and Gift of the Givers for the donation.
