 The South African National Aids Council (SANAC) leads South Africa’s response to the national HIV and AIDS, TB & STIs epidemics. SANAC is building a dynamic team that can facilitate its effective leadership of the national response.

Duration                      :           10 months (Renewable annually)

Purpose of the job

To provide technical leadership and oversight for the coordination of the development and implementation of the prevention, treatment, care and adherence support programs and interventions in support of the National Strategic Plan on HIV, TB, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (including Hepatitis).  This includes supporting the multi-sectoral platforms, Technical Task Teams, Technical Working Groups and all related activities at all levels to coordinate, develop, strengthen implementation and monitoring of treatment and treatment literacy-related initiatives/policies/plans for people living with HIV (PLHIV) in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support SANAC in the development /revision of treatment policy guidance and data-driven strategic planning to support implementation of the HIV, TB and STI programmes in line with evidence-based recommendations and practices.
  • Support the coordination, development, and implementation of HIV and TB treatment literacy-related initiatives and policies for PLHIV and People with TB.
  • Co-ordinate the cascading of treatment literacy-related initiatives for PLHIV and people with TB at sub-national levels.
  • Develop nuanced communication materials to promote HIV and TB treatment and literacy.
  • Facilitate the dissemination of treatment literacy messages through various platforms including mass media.
  • Convene technical working groups to discuss HIV/ TB / STI treatment issues and Treatment literacy-related issues to empower PLHIV to take responsibility and ownership of their health using evidence-based strategies and approaches.
  • Monitor, document and report on the best practices and lessons learnt resulting from the implementation of treatment literacy-related initiatives and activities.
  • Work closely with SANAC M&E Team, other Technical Leads, and other relevant stakeholders to coordinate research and dissemination of research results/outputs to inform decision making and programming for HIV, TB and STI treatment initiatives.
  • Work closely with other Units of SANAC to implement, monitor and report relevant Grants, including the development of Grant applications, Project Implementation Plans, and other related activities.
  • Representing SANAC Trust at external and internal meetings, conferences, symposiums, etc.
  • Network with international and local thought leaders, private sector leaders, government officials, advocacy groups, civil society leaders, and non-government organisations to understand their priorities, build the profile of SANAC profile and ensure optimal participation in all SANAC structures.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate national campaigns to communicate and advance priorities identified.
  • Any other task as delegated to by the Executive Management.

Qualification, Skills and Experience

  •  Master’s Degree in Clinical Health Sciences. Diploma in HIV Management / MBCHB qualification will be an added advantage.
  • 5-10 years working experience as HIV Clinician or in HIV Care and treatment programme.
  • Experience in managing HIV care and treatment programs including planning, designing, implementing, monitoring and evaluation as well as reporting.
  • Experience in HIV / TB/ STI treatment programme technical coordination.
  • Experience in development of provincial/national documents related to HIV/ TB/STI programmes.
  • Experience in coordinating stakeholders, working with Government departments, Development Partners, Donors, Civil Society Organizations, and the Private sector.
  • Extensive knowledge of the South African public health system, its system, and processes.
  • Extensive clinical knowledge and understanding of prevention, treatment and care of HIV TB and STI epidemics in South Africa.
  • Leadership, Strategic thinking, negotiation, and management skills.
  • Familiarity with government structures and processes and key networks.
  • Good interpersonal skills and knowledge of key vulnerabilities faced by PLHIV and People with TB.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Microsoft packages
  • Fluency in at least one South African language besides English.
  • Good planning and organising skills.
  • Ability to manage complex situations, including political situations
