PRETORIA: In his capacity as Chairperson of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC), Deputy President David Mabuza will on Tuesday, 16 July 2019 lead the launch of the UNAIDS Report titled “2019 Global AIDS Update, Communities at the Centre” in eShowe, KwaZulu Natal. The Deputy President will be accompanied by UNAIDS Acting Executive Director, Ms Gunilla Carlsson, Health Minister, Dr Zweli Mkhize and KwaZulu Natal Premier, Mr Sihle Zikalala.
The Report is a bi-annual update which contains the latest data on the progress and challenges in the AIDS response and highlights the enormous impact community health workers have in successfully expanding access to treatment, supporting adherence and preventing new HIV infections.
eShowe was selected as the launch site for the Report since it has successfully managed to achieve the UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets to curb new infections and successfully end the HIV epidemic.
The targets are: 90% of those infected with HIV should know their status; 90% of those diagnosed with HIV should be on treatment, and 90% of those on treatment should be virally suppressed (and therefore unable to transmit the virus).
Members of the media are invited to cover the launch as follows:
Date: 16 July 2019
Time: 10h00 to 12h00
Venue: King Dinuzulu Sportsfield, eShowe, uMlalazi, KwaZulu Natal
